Elven Lacryment

This is the first comic where I’ve actually been asked to review instead of choosing on my own. There are only about a dozen pages, but I think that everything I have to say will be true for the rest of comic as it moves forward.

Unlike most of the webcomics  review, Elven Lacryment only updates about once a month. They do make a point to say this on their site, but that doesn’t change the base fact. This comic started in May of 2005 and only has about 80 strips up, the latest coming in August of 2009. Part of the way through, the artists decided to start the story over, and re-do the graphics of all the pages, which makes them much more presentable and professional looking.

With a hard to follow storyline (even with looking at the character bios to try to puzzle something out) and wierd color references (which couldn’t be identified in the first run), Elven is a bit hard to like. In the first couple strips, the person you think is going to be the main character falls off a cliff (might be still alive, but I doubt it), and then the storyline jumps a number of years into the future to a new character (apparently the son of the person who fell of the cliff according to the bio). This kid soon gets run out of town, I think because of orcs (read the strips 5 times and I’m not 100% clear what happened. The first run though ends with him meeting a Strider/Aragorn type in a bar.

The only redeeming thing about the comic is the artwork in the second run (this is what picks the comic off of a 1 star rating). It is vastly improved from the first run and rivals some of the published comics I have seen. Because of this fact, I recommend this comic to anyone who doesn’t care about storylines that much.

Overall Rating: (1 1/2 stars)

Please note that the authors say on a number of pages that there will be gore and violence on the pages. You have been warned.
