Words with Friends

Somehow Scrabble got cool
If you’ve been reading for a while, you probably know that I’ve reviewed Scrabble style games before. By now, you’ve most likely heard of Words with Friends, whether you wanted to or not. Its pretty much a standard Scrabble with two players and a only slightly modified board.

I’ve always been a fan of Scrabble, and other sort of games that help engage the mind. Words with Friends captures that fairly well, which is fairly uncommon for a Facebook game. You can also have any number of games going at a time (assuming you can get others to play with you).

Unfortunately, getting other people to play with you can be an issue. With >50 people on my friends list who have the app installed, I only have around 4 people ho actually play. Even then, most of them don’t play more an a move every other day, making some games drag again.

Overall, an ok way to waste the occasional 10 minutes, but not a game to go out of your way to play.

Wonderdome

A trip down the corridors of the mind.

This comic is very strange. Before you dismiss that statement, let me repeat it, this comic is strange. When the creator told me it was weird in his e-mail asking for a reviewed, I didn’t think it would be too weird. I was wrong.

The first thing I would suggest to those who are thinking about reading this comic, is that you might want to consider doing so in some sort of altered consciousness. I can see that this comic would be hilarious to those with a (temporary) lose grip on reality, but as someone using his full faculties, not so much. The page around the comic is fairly cool (author claims to have done the coding himself, and its different enough that I’m inclined to believe him).

As I said in the last paragraph, I just plain didn’t find this comic funny. The WTF was WAY too high for my tastes, the occasional graphic nature (body parts and organs) seemed to have been more useful for a shock factor than anything funny, and the writing leaves me feeling like I’m on the outside of some sort of inside joke that would make the comics fall-down funny. I even tried rereading a number of the comics when I was barely awake enough to see the screen, and all it did was give me incredibly strange dreams when I did go to sleep.

Overall, a very strange comic that you might want to check out if you like that sort of thing, or you’re not in full control of you faculties.

Minitroopers

Bite-sized soldiers with big time weaponry.

Continuing my series of Twinoid games is Minitroopers. You are the commander of a growing squad of troops that square off against other armies, and the occasional group of rats. There is a variety of weaponry, skills, and items that your troopers can get as they level up, and they are all pretty interesting.

The good thing about the game is the humor in watching your troopers fight. Its incredibly unpredictable, and the battles are almost always interesting. You get a choice of two items everytime you level up, and building troops that work well together is fun.

The unfortunate things about this game however, are many and glaringly bad. The A.I. does stupid things, many items have chances of being useless (I’ve seen my 4 troopers put away their guns and wade in with fists vs. superior numbers), and the upgrades are few are far between. If you can win all three of your PvP missions for the day, and the PvE mission, you get 10 coins. Currently, it would cost 88 coins to upgrade a trooper, or 120 to buy a new one.

Overall, its a fun game, for maybe a week or two. After that, it gets boring, and does so quickly.
